NIGERIAN MUSLIMS NETWORK
The Nigerian Muslims Network (NMN) is an Internet-based discussion forum of Nigerian Muslims living in different parts of the globe. The aims and objectives of the NMN are as follows:
· To provide an effective and efficient means of communication (exchange information and share ideas) for Nigerian Muslims around the globe.
· To promote and propagate the religion of Islam.
· To serve as a forum for intellectual discussions on religious and other topical issues affecting Muslims in Nigeria.
· To provide positive encouragement to Muslim Organizations towards the consolidation of a united Ummah in Nigeria, by supporting (morally and financially) cross-fertilization of ideas and activities between the various Muslim Organizations.
· To maintain a close relationship and mutual co-operation with Islamic Organizations in Nigeria such as NMF, MSSN, MAN, IET, AMSE, SCIAN and FOMWAN as well as friendly Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as well as Governmental Organisation such as UNDP, IDB, UNIDO and UNESCO through the exchange of ideas and joint project execution
A BRIEF HISTORY OF NMN
The NMN started in 1991 as THT (Taskar Hausa a Turai - i.e. Centre for Hausa in Europe) with only 5 Muslim brothers who wanted to communicate in one of the Nigerian languages. The language of communication then was Hausa ONLY. The main aim at that time was to encourage the speaking of Hausa language. Gradually, however, membership expanded to about 25 people, and so the need arose for formal operational guidelines.
Later, as other non-Hausa speaking Muslims began to increasingly subscribe to the network, a further need to include ALL Nigerian Muslims arose and the name was subsequently changed to NMN (Nigerian Muslims Network). At present, there are over 500 subscribers to the NMN from around the globe.
